The 1µm wavelength is best suited for marking metals. Achievable surface effects range from very light to very dark in contrast. Long lasting high quality results can often be produced in just a matter of a few seconds. For some metals, especially aluminium, depth can be achieved with high detail not possible by other forms of engraving.
Marking metals by laser can be one of the most commercially rewarding applications in many industry sectors. Laser marked metal components make-up by far the vast majority of most commercial laser marking applications with some job-shops typically processing more than 95% of their work using a 1µm laser to mark metals.
Common applications include branding and part identification by marking of codes, serial numbers, etc
