Lotus Laser Systems Meta C 60w Fiber laser engraving green powder coated bottle
Reusable bottles are ever increasing in popularity as they help minimise the production of single use plastics as well as provide for a better consumer experience in terms of how hot or cold the contents are kept.
Higher quality bottles such as those from www.chillysbottles.com are made with a thicker powder coating to improve their resistance to wear and tear.
Some colours contain pigments that do not absorb the laser wavelengths 10.6µm (CO2) or 1µm (fiber) very well.
Marking on these bottles without a rotary device causes other issues such as 2d image distortion and lack of energy density due to defocusing of the focal point as it wraps around the curved surface
In particular, the dark blue and dark green powder coatings can be a real challenge.
To overcome these issues the parameters and system configuration used need to be precisely implemented.
A balance is also to be struck between the overall process time and the final aesthetic of the mark.
In this video we show one technique to mark the dark green bottle variant.
Low absorption is overcome by using multiple passes with high average power, long pulse width and high pulse energy to shave away the majority of the powder coating. With each pass a different angle is used.
During these initial passes a lot of heat is generated within the material. This can cause some slight darkening and some raised areas around the mark. This can be reduced and often can be removed by using a greater number of passes with the same laser parameters but at a higher beam delivery speed. The trade-off is that with more passes the process time becomes longer
We then apply two further passes at a lower average power, short pulse width and high peak power (low pulse energy) to clean-up (brighten) the discoloured bare metal that the earlier passes have produced.
In this example the smallest text elements of the design are only 0.755mm high yet they are clearly readable to the naked human eye.

Lotus Laser Systems Meta C 60w Mopa Fiber laser engraving automotive part
The UK company Mountune has a 40 year history manufacturing and supplying performance car parts. One of their parts is an air intake assembly for the Ford Fiesta ST
https://www.mountunestore.com/products/auxiliary-cold-air-intake-acai-mk8-fiesta-st
This component is made from aluminium that has been powder coated for protection and aesthetic reasons.
A Lotus Laser Systems Meta-C is used to apply the company brand logo.
The 60w MOPA laser removes the powder coating quickly and cleanly. For further aesthetic enhancement a second pass at a differing pulse width turns the previously engraved aluminium to a near perfect white finish

Lotus Laser Systems Meta C 75w CO2 laser engraving powder coated bottles
Using a CO2 galvo laser to remove powder coating from these types of bottle can be incredibly fast and effective.
In this video the Lotus Meta-C with a 75w CO2 laser delivered through a 2 axis scan head and a F254 F-theta lens removes the thick powder coating of two colours of bottle in just 22 seconds and 15 seconds respectively.
This configuration of system has a good depth of focus so that it is very forgiving as the beam is delivered over the curved surface of the bottle.
Especially when compared to a plotter CO2 laser, this system is not only faster; it delivers a higher quality result too.
Laser engraving bottles like these generates significant amounts of debris. The long focal length lens that we use also ensures that contamination of the lens is virtually zero
We have sold many machines for this application.

Lotus Laser Systems Meta C 75w CO2 laser engraving a ceramic mug
https://www.lotuslaser.com/
With this video we show Meta-C fitted with a 75w CO2 laser engraving a ceramic mug.
The laser passes the surface several times and with each pass a thin layer of material is removed to reveal a slightly deeper but significantly cleaner result.
Passing the surface one time with more intensity causes an adverse heat reaction.
With this test we show the maximum size of mark using an F254 lens without the product turning during the marking process.
Note that larger marks can be applied by using a rotary device but this will take a considerably longer process time.

Lotus Laser Systems Meta C 60w MOPA fiber laser engraving tools on 1 2m conveyor feed
https://www.lotuslaser.com/
With a choice of laser source from 1µm Q-switched fiber laser, various forms of 1µm MOPA fiber laser, 10.6µm CO2 laser and even UV laser sources Meta-C is a laser marking workstation with a level of options and functionality unrivalled in its class.
By semi-automating the part handling process it is possible to significantly increase the throughput capabilities of Meta-C. One such handling device is our 1.2m conveyor feed mechanism.
The system that we built for this customer incorporated x63 v-groove fixtures made from nylon and mounted to the 1.2m conveyor. The customers parts are cylindrical and of varying size. These V-groove fixtures will hold all of their parts with variation in diameter.
The parts are loaded by human and a guide rail positions them in the Y axis. As the part enters the marking field an inductive sensor triggers a stop and mark command. After the mark is finished the system electronics signal the device to move and repeat the process.
As the 1.2m conveyor is beyond the width of the cabinet opening, when fitted with the conveyor the system operates in a Class 4 mode. During Class 4 operation all staff within the work environment surrounding the laser must wear laser safety eye protection.
This system is fitted with a 60w MOPA fiber laser. A multi pass technique creates depth to approximately 0.25mm and a clean-up pass brightens the mark. A lens with F254 was used to give a depth of focus approximately 2mm

Lotus Laser Systems uMeta laser engraving the inside of rings
https://www.lotuslaser.com/
The personalisation of rings can be a lucrative application for a laser marking machine but without the right equipment and software it can be a risky process with variable results.
At Lotus Laser Systems we have laser marking equipment and software that is very well design to make this process easy, reasonably fast and with predictable, high quality results
In this video we show µMeta laser engraving brass rings with two techniques:
1) Removing material to create some depth. This technique requires multiple passes to achieve material ablation then we follow-up with further passes to clean and brighten the engraved area
2) Marking the material to achieve contrast in the shortest possible time. With this technique there is some material ablation but there is no significant depth to the engraving.
µMeta incorporates a 30w Q-switched fiber laser that works well for laser engraving rings, however, if the material is highly reflective (Gold, silver, platinum) better and faster result can be achieved using our model Meta-C fitted with a MOPA fiber laser source.
In particular, the SPI MOPA fiber laser is the ultimate laser source for this application because not only does it have the highest quality beam it has a patented design for minimising damage through backward reflection.

Lotus Laser Systems uMeta laser marking a high quality photo to a keychain
https://www.lotuslaser.com/machine/umeta/
With this video we show just how well uMeta can laser mark a detailed photograph to a chrome plated keychain.
Laser marking small bitmap photo images to sensitive surfaces like this can be a challenge for most machine. Many will not be able to achieve good detail or contrast but most commonly many machines from alternative providers will produce images with clearly visible errors, such as banding lines
The set-up time for this file was less than 1 minute making this application easy, fast to set-up and produce and highly effective
Using a lens with a shorter focal length can increase the image resolution to be even better

Lotus Laser Systems Meta C MOPA fiber laser marking plastics
https://www.lotuslaser.com/
Some plastics do not mark with good contrast and/or react adversely when marked by a 1µm Q-switched fiber laser. For example, foaming excessively can cause a mark to deteriorate with abrasion.
When marking plastics using a 1µm MOPA fiber laser is often a better solution because with MOPA technology it's possible to vary the pulse width and create a 'colder' mark
In this video with incorporate to Meta-C an SPI 20w RMZ MOPA fiber laser. This particular laser is one of the best on the market. It has excellent beam quality as well as one of the widest range of pulse width and PRF settings for any laser of this type: x40 variable pulse widths from 3-500ns and PRF of 1-1000kHz.
Meta-C is our flagship model with the widest range of laser source options and fantastic functionality and reliability

Lotus Laser Systems uMeta Laser engraving steel and aluminium with some depth
https://www.lotuslaser.com/machine/umeta/
In these trials we use the µMeta 20w Q-switched fiber laser engraving workstation to engrave sheet stainless steel and block aluminium achieving some depth.
To engrave depth by laser requires multiple passes. Rather than using a slow beam delivery, for this trial we chose to deliver the beam at 1m/s. The reason for this is that while a slower beam delivery speed will engrave deeper it will also generate more of an adverse heat reaction to the surrounding areas of the engraving
The alternative approach of using a higher speed with more passes reduces and in some cases eliminates any such adverse effects. For these trials we used x60 passes for each engraving
Depth is directly related to the number of passes so that more passes = more depth but also more time.
While the result is not exactly linear to the parameters used it's not far from it so, for example, using twice the number of passes will approximately achieve twice the depth at two times more processing time
Note that these trials were performed using an F254 lens (180mm mark area). A faster rate of ablation is possible using a lens with a shorter focal length such as F163 (110mm mark area) because the F163 will have a smaller focal point with a higher energy density
At only 20w of laser power it is possible to achieve a depth of a few millimetres in these materials, especially aluminium.
Using a MOPA fiber laser will produce a better result but there's a balance to be drawn between the cost of a MOPA fiber laser and the commercial demands of the business.
