Most textiles can be marked with stunning effect by a 10.6µm laser. In high volume production environments specially configured high speed galvo systems are used that incorporate a dynamic focusing element that delivers the beam over large areas up to 1.5×1.5m. Most commonly this is seen as a simple fading effect for fashion denim jeans but the same systems and processes can produce complex images and patterns too. With this technique the dye is removed from the denim with minimal, if any at all, degradation of the fabric.
Most textiles can be cut by a 10.6µm laser. Fabrics made from natural materials work very well. In the case of silk, cutting by laser has the added advantage that the edge is heat-sealed during the cutting process. This prevents the fraying of silk, which is almost inevitable if it is cut by conventional blades
